Many engaged couples dream of their wedding day when they can officially be joined with the one they love in the presence of family and friends. For both the bride and groom, the wedding day holds many memories that will be cherished for a lifetime. It is safe to say that even looking back at the jolly memories could serve as a succor during hard days. However, this is not to negate how weddings can sometimes go awry and be borderline dramatic.
For Reddit user LifeTraining3452, the memories from his wedding will always bring forth mixed feelings because of how the day turned out. On Aug. 15, 2023, the Redditor shared the story of how his bride became upset on their wedding day after spotting their 6-year-old nephew wearing white.
The traditional white wedding dress for a bride symbolizes purity, prosperity and a lifetime commitment to their partner. The ceremonial wedding color is also generally viewed as something solely preserved for a bride on her big day. This is why most brides often prefer that no other person wears a white-colored outfit at their event.
However, the way different brides handle this issue of having a guest wear white to their wedding varies according to the individual. The (original poster) OP who was also the groom, shared the story of how his bride got upset on seeing their young nephew in a white outfit. He took to the AITA subreddit to explain the story and what transpired on his wedding day while seeking advice from other Redditors on the matter and the manner he handled it. The OP explained the whole situation, which brought his bride to tears and made her miserable.

He shared that the wedding ceremony was “amazing” until it was time for the reception. He wrote:
“My wife was very strict on the fact that no guest is allowed to wear white, which is understandable because for females that’s considered rude or bad luck at weddings I think.”
Having said their vows and being joined in holy matrimony, the couple took to the reception to celebrate the start of a new life together on the dance floor. The Redditor shared that the reception segment was “going well too” until he saw his wife going to the bathroom with her hands on her face.
The OP then took readers back to the history of their relationship. He shared that they had been together for three years. Therefore, he could easily tell when his wife was upset. On seeing her walking to the bathroom visibly disturbed, he needed no one else to tell him something was amiss.
Being a caring and loving husband, the Reddit user wrote that he hurriedly went across the room, giving excuses to guests to find his wife. He added that once he got to the bathroom, he told his wife that he had seen her and went after her. The OP continued that his bride unlocked the bathroom to let him in. However, he met her in a dejected state, “sitting on the floor with mascara running down her cheeks.”
The Redditor explained further that when he asked his wife what the problem was, “She told me that one of our nephews was wearing white jeans and a white bow tie.” On hearing this, the OP told her in a nice way that she was overreacting and should cheer up and enjoy the reception, and forget about the whole incident.

Thinking everything was back to normal, the Redditor continued that he spotted his wife talking to his sister, the mother of his nephew, and thought she was only “making conversation.” The OP then wrote that after an hour, his sister berated him about his wife’s behavior, informing him that she asked her and her son “to leave unless she had a change of clothes for him.”
The Reddit user was not okay with this new development and requested an explanation from his wife. The bride maintained that she was right, but the Redditor wrote:
“I told her that if she kicks my family out then I will happily leave too. My wife started crying again and saying that this is her day and she doesn’t want it to be ruined by our nephew. This angered me because I had enough of her ruining our day over something silly. I then said she was not only selfish but that she was insanely insecure if she’s worried about a six year old looking better than her.”
The Redditor then concluded that his wife had gone to stay with her mother since the incident. He noted that his mother-in-law called and demanded that he apologize to his wife. However, he did not believe that he was in the wrong. Other Reddit users filed to the comment section, weighing in on the situation.
Many agreed that he was not in the wrong, as they clamped down on his wife’s reaction. One person wrote, “It’s not too early for an annulment.”
“Maybe people would have confused him for the bride, given she’s acting 6 years old over the situation,” another chimed.
“NTA – Her reaction was really extreme, and I can’t make sense of why what that child was wearing even matters,” one Redditor supported.
